It also means documenting enough of the process that counsel can understand how a set of records was prioritized or summarized.
The reviewer should be alert to false patterns. A common word may appear significant because the data set is narrow. A topic cluster may mix privileged and non-privileged material. A communication burst may reflect automatic alerts rather than human coordination. A name match may merge two people with similar identifiers. The point of validation is to catch these problems before the analysis affects strategy.
Poor Source Data Produces Poor Patterns
Pattern detection depends on the quality of the collection. Missing custodians, incomplete exports, stripped metadata, time-zone errors, duplicate records, bad OCR, and broken thread context can all distort the results. Before drawing conclusions, counsel should know what was collected, what was excluded, what could not be processed, and whether the data was deduplicated, filtered, or normalized.
